Experts warn against drying clothes indoors, particularly during winter, as it can lead to elevated indoor moisture levels and fungal growth. This can pose health risks, including fatal lung infections, for individuals with weakened immune systems or respiratory conditions.
Experts have issued a serious health warning to those who dry clothes indoors, highlighting the risks that come with trying to get laundry dry during the winter months. With tumble dryers being costly and outdoor drying not an option due to cold or wet conditions, many resort to draping their washing over radiators.
Researchers from the University of Manchester, including Professor David Denning and his team at the National Aspergillosis Centre, have delved into the dangers of drying washed clothes inside. They've seen an increase in patients suffering from conditions caused by inhaling Aspergillus fungal spores, which can thrive in the damp environment created by wet laundry.
"My advice would be when in doubt, dry wet washing outside, in a tumble dryer or in a well-ventilated indoor space away from bedrooms and living areas. Be safe rather than sorry."
