This wasn’t happenstance; he had scouted the place, knew exactly where the opening was located. He had always planned to share his victory with the fans who make this event so special, and soon, he found himself engulfed by back-slapping well-wishers.
“It felt like a dangerous end to the race,” he said later. “There weren’t enough laps to do what we did. You can’t get the tires up to temperature. I think I did a great job behind the wheel and caught Josef off guard and built a gap and kept the lead. I just couldn’t hold him back.“I don’t think that was fair. It feels like we did everything right and won that race, but it got taken away from us.
This was, without any question or hesitation, massively entertaining. One lap, the Borg Warner and immortality on the line? Everybody driving like their lives were on the line – which, in a sense, they were. Drivers talk about putting on a show, and in 23 years of covering this madness, that was the greatest show I’ve ever seen at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.“We need to think about the show,” he said. “The biggest complaint we have every year was we shouldn’t finish a race under the yellow.
And yet, there he was just minutes later, being interviewed by NBC after getting checked out by the medical folks.
