Renowned as arguably the greatest footballer ever, Pele’s funeral saw thousands of fans line the streets in Santos, Brazil to honour him.As football fans around the world paid tribute to the legendary figure, those in the city of his former club Santos had the special honour of witnessing his send-off first hand.
Pele had been lying in state and Santos’s Urbano Caldeira stadium for the public to pay their respects, with 230,000 attending, before his coffin was carried through the streets on Tuesday.The nation of Brazil has been in a period of mourningCarried on a fire truck to a private family funeral, Pele’s coffin was covered in a Brazil flag and also passed by the house where his 100-year-old mother, Celeste Arantes, still lives.
The cortege ended at port city’s Memorial Cemetary where a private catholic funeral service was held before Pele was interred in a 10-storey mausoleum that holds the Guinness World Record as the tallest cemetery on Earth.
