An Irish influencer, Krystal Joyce, was awarded €20,000 by a Dublin court after a security guard falsely accused her of shoplifting in a Zara changing room. The incident caused Joyce significant distress and humiliation.

An Irish influencer, Krystal Joyce, has been awarded a five-figure payout after a security guard falsely accused her of shoplifting in a Zara changing room in Dublin. The 20-year-old was trying on clothes and filming herself for a TikTok video when she was approached by a female security guard. Joyce claims the guard, in front of other customers, implied she was planning to steal and questioned her about her actions. She felt humiliated and distressed by the ordeal.

Joyce, who documents her life as an Irish Traveller and has 122,000 followers, stated that she was 'interrogated' in front of others during the incident, while a written report of the incident by Zara staff was 'falsified'. Her barrister, Esther Earley, explained that Joyce frequently takes photos of herself trying on outfits in store changing rooms for her followers. On this occasion, a security worker repeatedly said in front of other shoppers, 'I am calling the guards'. Joyce said she was then informed she could not leave the store before being interrogated on the shop floor. A judge at Dublin's circuit civil court ruled in Joyce's favor, awarding her €20,000 for her distress. Judge Roderick Maguire stated that he found Joyce to be a truthful witness and particularly upset because of her social media presence, through which she raises awareness for the Travelling community. He acknowledged that this was a public place Joyce frequented and was in the habit of trying on clothes. The judge also criticized Zara's defense and the testimonies from their eyewitnesses, citing 'glaring inconsistencies'.Joyce was awarded €10,000 in damages against ITX Retail Limited, which operates the Zara store, and another €10,000 against Bidvest Noonan (ROI) Limited, the company from which the security guard was sourced. This case highlights the potential for false accusations and the importance of treating individuals with respect, regardless of their social media presence or background
