Irish jockey Gearoid Harney is recovering after suffering head injuries in a fall at Fakenham racecourse. Harney was riding Micronormous for trainer David Pipe when the horse slipped, sending the 23-year-old jockey crashing to the ground. While the horse was unharmed, Harney was taken to hospital. Pipe has since issued an update stating that Harney is battered and bruised but expected to make a full recovery with some rest.
The 23-year-old Cork jockey was taken to hospital on Sunday after suffering head injuries in a fall at Fakenham racecourse. Harney was riding Micronormous for Pipe in the Sky Bet Queen Boudicca Series Final Mares' Handicap Chase but the horse slipped on a bend and sent Harney crashing to the ground in a heavy fall.
The last race had to be abandoned due to insufficient medical cover as Harney was attended to on the track and later taken to hospital by ambulance. Pipe gave a positive update on Harney’s condition saying: “Thank you for your kind thoughts and wishes for jockey Gearoid Harney. “Although he was knocked out and is battered and bruised he is being allowed out of hospital and will be okay with some rest, these jockeys are made of strong stuff. "We're waiting to hear but he might be allowed out of the hospital today. He's up at Norfolk and we're keeping in contact with him and his parents." The conditional rider had another lucky escape at Market Rasen on Friday after narrowly avoiding a serious accident while jogging on the track during a race. Harney, who went on to win the closing race on the card, was passed twice by the runners in an earlier race while running on the course wearing headphones and not hearing the horses coming. He has ridden 21 winners since moving to the UK from Ireland in 2021 having ridden in point-to-points in this country. The stewards looked into the incident at Fakenham on Sunday and reported: "Gearoid Harney, the rider of Micronormous, had fallen on the bend entering the back straight on the second circuit. After viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that there was possible interference resulting in Micronormous falling. Harney was unable to be interviewed following the incident and therefore the enquiry was adjourned till a later date."
