Ligue 1 side Strasbourg managed to keep a clean sheet despite the early loss of Nottingham Forest’s on-loan defender Andrew Omobamidele.

The Ireland defender had made an impressive start to his time in Ligue 1 . The trip to Lens was his fifth appearance and his third start in all competitions since his January transfer window loan move from Premier League side Nottingham Forest.

Omobamidele settled quickly into life in France and soon won over the Strasbourg support with his commanding displays in the middle of a three-man central defence. He made his debut as a substitute in a 2-1 win against Lille and then started the next three league games, including Sunday’s. His performances even won the 22-year-old acclaim in the notoriously hard-to-please French sports daily, L’Equipe, where his display in a 2-0 win against Montpellier earned him the following write-up:

“The new central defender is already like a fish in water in Strasbourg. In the three defence axis, he brings serenity and he has already become the team’s first receiver . He won twice in front of Coulibaly, who was in a very good position to shoot. He won his duels and cleared seven balls .”They face Brest next Sunday and are currently one point ahead of their opponents, with both sides very much in the hunt for Europe. One fan described Omobamidele’s injury as “a very big blow.
