Cleveland Metropolitan School District is moving away from traditional discipline, instead incorporating intervention strategies that teach students not only wrong from right, but the skills to make a long-term change.

CLEVELAND, Ohio --

Since the approach launched in the 2009-2010 school year, about 100 planning centers have opened districtwide. Each center has its own planning center instructional assistant , a staff member extensively trained in recognizing what strategies to use for specific students’ needs. Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer will be highlighting the district’s planning center approach many times throughout their ongoing special series, Cleveland’s Promise. As part of the project, two reporters have spent more than a year embedded at Almira, observing the innovative ways educators reach students whose lives are complicated by poverty. In Wednesday’s installment of the series, you will see Almira’s planning center in action, when one of Ms.

Teacher referral is the most common way students end up in the planning center, but the district is trying to encourage students to be more proactive by teaching “young people to recognize their own behavior, so they can self-refer to the planning center,” according to Stencil.
