BBC One's new drama Babies will explore a loved-up couple's heartbreak of pregnancy loss.

BBC Babies is a 'gripping warm and urgent love story' that revolves around a couple's struggle to conceive. After falling madly in love with each other, a couple in their thirties are keen to have a baby but endure several miscarriages, which leaves them devastated.

BBC drama Babies will explore their heartache, while also highlighting the 'humour, warmth and an unwavering bond' that accompanies such loss. Babies will premiere this evening on Monday, March 30, at 9pm on BBC One, replacing the slot formerly occupied by MasterChef: The Professionals . The six-episode series will air at the same time on Mondays and Tuesdays, though viewers will also be able to watch the entire run on BBC iPlayer from 6am on March 30. Steven, a bloke hoping to become a dad, is portrayed by actor Paapa Essiedu, widely recognised for his roles in The Capture, I May Destroy You and The Lazarus Project. He's also lined up to take on the legendary role of Professor Severus Snape in the HBO Max Harry Potter reboot series. Essiedu stars alongside Irish actress Siobhan Cullen as his partner Lisa, with the performer known for appearing in The Obituary, The Dry and Bodkin. Their friends, Dave and Amanda, are portrayed by actors Jack Bannon and Charlotte Riley. While Bannon is most recognised for his role as Sam Thursday in ITV's Endeavour and Alfred Pennyworth in Pennyworth, Riley is fondly recalled for portraying May Carleton in Peaky Blinders and Catherine Earnshaw in ITV's version of Wuthering Heights. The official description for Babies on BBC One states: 'Babies is a gripping, warm and urgent love story about a couple struggling through the experience of pregnancy loss. 'Lisa and Stephen suffer multiple miscarriages, their hope heroic in the face of grief. As the audience yearns for them, roots for them, feels for them, there is always the glow of hope, humour and love. 'The series also follows Amanda and Dave - a new couple navigating their own challenges and testing their compatibility. 'Their complex relationship, set against Lisa and Stephen's ongoing pregnancy journey, begins to expose cracks in Stephen and Dave's long-standing friendship.' Babies premieres on Monday, March 30, at 9pm on BBC One.
