A full first-team training session the same morning also restricted United’s options, as the starting line-up from the Tottenham defeat needed to be supplemented by extra players to enable a competitive and worthwhile session. As ever with friendlies, fitness was the priority rather than the result. And though concerns have been raised about United’s conditioning in the opening weeks of the season, it is not unusual for the club to arrange games of this nature after the start of a new season.
