A new one-off documentary sees Ade Adepitan visiting the controversial Afrikaner town
Ade Adepitan travels to one of the world’s most controversial settlements in Whites Only: Ade’s Extremist Adventure During his visit, Adepitan becomes the first black person to stay in the town of 3,000 white Afrikaners, descendants of white European settlers.“Through my work, I have been fortunate to have encountered many different cultures and environments around the world, but the personal experience I had making this film really opened my eyes.

Orania is located along the Orange River in the Karoo region of the Northern Cape province of South Africa.Why is Orania a ‘whites only’ town?It was established in 1991 by Carel Boshoff, the son-in-law of former prime minister Hendrik Verwoerd, who is often described as the “architect ofThe controversial settlement is described as “whites only” and has been accused by many of attempting to revive apartheid, something the community denies.
Residents wishing to settle in Orania must commit to a conservative, Christian lifestyle that includes the prohibition of unmarried couples living together.“They’ve got weapons. I hope viewers of my documentary find themselves asking where the money is coming from. Because I’ve travelled all around Orania and I’ve seen that they have hardly any industry. They have no manufacturing base. They’ve got this tiny population in the middle of the desert and yet it’s able to sustain itself.
