“Betrayal, especially in basketball, is a strong word,” Petrucci said. “Situations like this happen, and personally, I’m used to it. But he fooled us. We were planning a great commercial strategy for him.”“For me, I just said thank you for what they had done since I was in high school, just how they helped me in terms of getting my citizenship, just learning more about the country, my heritage,” he said. “But no, I think it was respect on both sides.
At 6-10 and 250 pounds, Banchero has the ideal body for international play, with plenty of speed to run the floor and skill to handle the ball and pass. As Kerr said: “Man, he is skilled, and he is raw, but in a good way.” Banchero said Thursday he understands he has to earn a role with this group, and that role could be, at minimum, smaller than he is used to from the Magic and even Duke.
Whatever Team USA needs from Banchero, the Italians needed more. But that window is closed, and Banchero will have chances to win World Cups and Olympic golds with the Americans — now and later.
