The proposed aquarium’s location was the source of a fierce public relations battle.
This illustration accompanied a fiery op-ed piece by M.H. de Young that appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle on Sept. 27, 1916.Ignatz Steinhart could sense his dream coming closer to reality. At a ceremony in Golden Gate Park to lay the cornerstone for what would be the de Young Museum, Steinhart thought of the aquarium that he and his late brother had been fighting to build there for over a decade.

What was it that resonated, and why not an art museum or a school?”Courtesy of California Academy of Sciences Ignatz lost May after 23 years of marriage, however, when she died in her sleep in 1901 at the age of 42. The Chronicle’s obituary said May had been “an invalid for the last few years,” but her death still came as a shock. The story said that on the day of her death,"feeling comfortable yesterday morning, she took a ride to Golden Gate Park and on her return said she would lie down for a short rest.
Steinhart struggled to realize his vision, almost to the point where he abandoned it. He raised his donation offer to $50,000 to have the aquarium built in the park for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exhibition. A January 1912 Chronicle report suggested he might have had the support of federal Fisheries Commissioner George Bowers.
