With the arrival of Lionel Messi in MLS heralding a new era for the league, it appears that Inter Miami chiefs are determined to ensure that the Argentine's spell at the club has a legacy
Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas has admitted that the long-term planning for life after Lionel Messi has already begun at the MLS club - with more 'global superstars' being pursued.
Demonstrating the ambition of the upwardly mobile outfit, fellow superstars Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba also followed their old Barcelona teammate to Chase Stadium. Now, Miami tycoon Mas has revealed that Vice City chiefs are already mapping out their next steps as a club as they plan for further development.
As a result, Mas is not shy in admitting that the arrival of Messi and his cabal of superstar co-stars may herald the start of an influx of talent descending on Miami. He told Time : "We do anticipate, in 2027 and beyond, to have a, or multiple, global superstars on our roster. We've become a beacon for the sport in the U.S. I don’t think there’s any limits to the future."
It appears that his ambition is shared among key MLS figures too, with commissioner Don Garber having openly acknowledged that the arrival of Messi forms part of a wider strategy. For him, forward planning appears to be at the forefront of his priorities as the league navigates its next chapter.
