Investigators found 6,000 cases of suspected welfare fraud last year

Data covering a six-year period shows suspected fraud arises most frequently in jobseekers claims

Mr Geoghegan said the figures highlight the “ongoing challenge” of social welfare fraud, with about 1,000 more suspected cases reported last year compared to 2023. The Pandemic Unemployment Payment , introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic, accounted for 7 per cent of suspected fraud cases in 2021, and 10 per cent the following year.
