Met Eireann has issued warnings of potentially heavy rain, strong winds, and even sleet and snow for the coming days as Ireland rings in the New Year. The national forecaster predicts a series of low pressure systems will bring widespread unsettled weather, starting on December 31st with heavy rain and strong winds in the northwest. Another, more significant, low pressure system is expected on Wednesday, bringing very strong and blustery winds and heavy rain to all areas. The forecaster warns of potential river level increases and surface water flooding.
Met Eireann has warned of 'potentially significant and impactful weather' on Tuesday as the country prepares to ring in the New Year. According to the national forecaster, a series of low pressure centres are currently developing out in the Atlantic which will lead to widespread rain, strong winds and some falls of sleet and snow.

Met Eireann Meteorologist Mark Bowe has said “the low moving over on Tuesday will bring significant winds to the northwest but rain will be widespread and rather heavy at times too which could lead to spot flooding.” The adverse weather conditions will continue into the New Year, with strong winds, widespread rain and freezing temperatures on the cards throughout this week. Bowe added that the weather on Wednesday will prove to be a lot more significant with more rain and very strong and blustery winds for all areas. The forecaster said “we are currently tracking the development of the low pressure system expected for Wednesday with potentially some very impactful winds across western and southern areas.” For now the low pressure system looks set to track right across the country with significant winds expected for western and southern areas. Met Eireann has warned that the spells of heavy rain may lead to significant river level increases and there is the potential for surface water flooding where highest rainfall totals are observed. Rain in the southwest continues to extend northeastwards over on New Year's Eve night, heavy in places, with spot flooding possible. Some falls of sleet and snow may occur also. More showery conditions are likely in the north. There is the chance of strong winds in the south but they may stay off shore.New Years Day will see heavy rain for a time, mainly in the east and south, with some falls of sleet or snow possible too. This will clear away southeastwards during the day. It may be windy in parts for a time too with winds becoming northwesterly and gradually easing. Some sunny spells will develop with showers in parts. Highest temperatures of 5C to 8C, but it'll become cold everywhere through the evening. Becoming mostly dry early in the night as winds ease northerly. Cold with lowest temperatures of -5C to +1C with widespread frost and ice developing. A few wintry flurries are possible in the north.Largely dry, sunny and cold with just a few light showers along north facing coasts, some wintry. Highest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees generally in mostly light northerly winds. Mostly dry, clear and cold overnight. Lowest temperatures of -6 to +1 degrees with widespread frost.
