Ireland is experiencing a significant cold snap with plummeting temperatures and widespread snow forecast. The cold weather is expected to last for several days with potential for record low temperatures.

If you think it's cold this morning, prepare for temperatures to get significantly lower as Ireland's cold snap shows no sign of coming to an end any time soon. Following an unusually mild festive period, Ireland is now in the midst of a big freeze as Met Eireann has issued a number of weather warnings for this weekend with plenty of snow forecast in subzero temperatures.

While the lowest temperatures experienced by Ireland are typically overnight, one reliable forecaster has suggested that we could see lows of -6C one afternoon next week. Alan O'Reilly, who mans the popular @CarlowWeather account on X, explained that freezing fog will result in Wednesday being a particularly chilly day. He posted: 'The forecast temperatures for Wednesday afternoon are not something we see too often for Ireland with -6c at 3pm! The issue is fog is forecast and that freezing fog could keep temperatures very cold right through Wednesday.' This tallies with what Met Eireann are expecting for the middle of next week as the national forecaster expects temperatures to drop to lows of -8C on Tuesday night prior to a very cold day on Wednesday. A nationwide weather advisory comes into effect on Sunday night as severe frost and icy patches will develop in many areas and snow will persist, along with the drop in temperatures. This advisory will be in place until 11pm on Thursday night though this is subject to change as weather warnings come into place. The potential impacts of the weather include hazardous travelling conditions and disruption to travel services. Meanwhile, a number of weather warnings are in place for various counties today. A Status Orange rain and snow warning will come into effect for Cork, Kerry and Waterford from 5pm Saturday until 5pm Sunda
