The Health Service Executive (HSE) has confirmed the first-ever case of Clade I mpox in Ireland. The patient, an Irish resident who recently traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo, is receiving specialized care. Authorities are tracing close contacts and investigating the source of the infection.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) has announced the detection of Ireland 's first-ever case of Clade I mpox, a more severe strain of the viral disease previously known as monkeypox. The infected individual, an Irish resident, is currently receiving specialized medical care at a hospital in eastern Ireland . They had recently traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Public health authorities are actively engaged in tracing the close contacts of the patient and investigating the circumstances surrounding the infection. The HSE emphasizes that the risk to the general Irish public remains low. Ireland experienced an outbreak of Clade II mpox in 2022, recording 229 confirmed cases within a year of the disease becoming notifiable on May 27th of that year. Infections peaked in August 2022 and subsequently declined rapidly. Most cases were mild, resulting in hospitalization for only 20 infections. There were no reported deaths. However, Clade I mpox is associated with a significantly higher risk of illness and mortality. While Clade II mpox was reclassified as no longer a High Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID) in the United Kingdom in January 2023, Clade I remains classified as an HCID. The HSE states that the identification of Clade I mpox in Ireland was anticipated, given the recent emergence of small numbers of cases in Europe and other countries outside of Africa. Dr. Éamonn O’Moore, director of national health protection with the HSE, assures the public that the risk to the Irish population remains low. He explains that close contacts are being contacted by local public health teams, provided with appropriate guidance to minimize the risk of potential spread, and will be closely monitored until the risk of infection subsides. The HSE is diligently investigating how the individual contracted the infection. Dr. Derval Igoe, a consultant in public health medicine, notes that individuals who have received two doses of the mpox vaccine or have previously had mpox infection are considered to have protection against severe illness caused by Clade I mpox. Currently, booster vaccination is not recommended. People who have recently returned from a country where mpox is actively circulating in the community are advised to monitor themselves for symptoms for three weeks and seek medical advice if they have any concerns. Common symptoms include a skin rash or pus-filled lesions, which can persist for two to four weeks. Other symptoms may include fever, headaches, muscle aches, back pain, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes. Anyone experiencing these symptoms is urged to self-isolate and contact their doctor immediately
