A 14°C temperature difference exists across the country, with the Midlands dropping to -7°C and the south reaching 7°C. Milder air is expected to bring showers and drizzle over the weekend, but fresh snowfall has been reported in Limerick and Tipperary. While ice warnings remain in place for several counties, a major thaw is anticipated this afternoon.
Ireland is waking up to a wide variety of conditions this morning as some areas still feel the effects of the big freeze and others experience significantly higher temperatures than in recent days.
It comes as milder air moves in following the cold snap, bringing with it showery conditions and drizzle into the weekend. A spokesperson for Met Eireann said: "Very cold across most of the country this morning, with widespread frost and ice or black ice. Cloud and rain in the southwest will slowly move northeast through the day, turning to sleet for a time with snow on high ground. It will stay dry in Ulster and north Leinster. Highest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees generally but not as cold in the southwest with moderate to fresh east to southeast winds developing.
