'This isn’t just about protecting the natural world, it’s about protecting civilisation and life as we know it'

Ireland is leading calls for the European Union to adopt its long debated Nature Restoration Law at the next Environment Council meeting.

Minister Ryan said: “Europe is the fastest warming continent in the world and is facing unprecedented impacts from the intertwined nature and climate crises. “Worse, we will seriously undermine efforts across the EU to restore our damaged and degraded ecosystems. People depend on nature for much more than we realise.

Backtracking on agreed compromises has resulted in the loss of a qualfied majority supporting the law. Dr Elaine McGoff, Environmental Pillar spokesperson and Head of Advocacy with An Taisce, said: "We strongly welcome this necessary and urgent intervention by the EU environment ministers supporting the Nature Restoration Law.
