Premier League newcomers Southampton were condemned to their second consecutive defeat by a goal 20 minutes from time.
Ireland midfielder Will Smallbone said there was one aspect of Southampton’s defeat on Saturday to Nottingham Forest that frustrated him more than any other.Having worked all week on combating Forest’s dead-ball prowess, it was a deeply disappointing way to cough up the chance of a first Premier League point of the season.
“It's just really frustrating for the game to be lost on a goal from a set play, which we're massive on, but I think there are signs for positivity. “We came out for the second half, we spoke at half-time about controlling the game and making it turn into a game that we saw so many times last year, and I think we managed to do that.
“It's just disappointing to concede a goal like that, but I think going forward, if we can carry on to play exactly how we played in the second half, then there'll be positive signs.” Southampton, who started the season with two single-goal defeats to Newcastle and Forest, are up against Cardiff City next in the League Cup, before returning to Premier League action next weekend away to Brentford.
