The Health Service Executive (HSE) in Ireland has confirmed the country's first-ever case of Clade I mpox, a more severe form of the viral disease previously known as monkeypox. The patient, an Irish citizen, recently traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where mpox is currently circulating. Public health officials are working to trace contacts and investigate the source of the infection.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has identified the country's first case of Clade I mpox, a more severe strain of the viral disease previously known as monkeypox. The patient, an Irish citizen, is currently receiving specialized medical care at a hospital in eastern Ireland . Their recent travels to the Democratic Republic of Congo are believed to be the source of their infection.

Public health officials are actively tracing the close contacts of the infected individual and investigating the transmission route. The HSE emphasizes that the risk to the Irish public remains low. \Ireland previously experienced an outbreak of Clade II mpox in 2022, with 229 confirmed cases recorded after the disease became reportable on May 27th of that year. Infections peaked in August 2022 and subsequently declined rapidly. The majority of cases were mild, resulting in only 20 hospitalizations out of the reported infections. Fortunately, there were no fatalities. However, Clade I mpox is associated with a significantly higher risk of illness and death. While Clade II mpox was reclassified as a non-High Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID) in the UK in January 2023, Clade I remains an HCID. \The detection of Clade I mpox in Ireland was anticipated by the HSE, as small clusters of cases have been reported in Europe and other countries outside of Africa. Dr. Éamonn O’Moore, director of national health protection with the HSE, assured the public, stating, 'The risk to the Irish population remains low.' He added that close contacts are being contacted by the local public health team, provided with appropriate guidance to mitigate the risk of transmission, and will be monitored until the risk of infection subsides. Dr. O’Moore further explained that the HSE is actively investigating how the individual acquired the infection. The HSE is fully prepared to respond to this case, as preparations have been ongoing since August 2022. They have been collaborating with international partners and closely monitoring mpox developments since the initial outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
