In a wide-ranging interview with the Irish Mirror, Dr Hearne, a housing academic and activist turned Social Democrats politician for Dublin North-West, stated the previous government “has never treated the housing crisis like an emergency”
Ireland is “reinstitutionalising single mothers” by placing them in emergency accommodation with their kids, Social Democrats TD Rory Hearne has argued.

What was also happening was you had evictions from private rental properties where the properties were being repossessed by the banks because we were still in that post-crash period where there were still repossessions.
Due to a lack of social housing being built, people became reliant on schemes like the Housing Assistance Payment. This is a contribution towards the cost of the rent. He said: “I’ve spoken to families with children with additional needs, autism, in emergency accommodation, in places where there’s five or six families on a floor in these hubs. They’re sharing the room with the child. The children have sensory issues and can’t be in these confined places.
“Two years in emergency accommodation is institutionalisation. Many of them are one-parent families. It’s like we’re back to reinstitutionalising mothers, single mothers. I can’t get my head around how we have accepted this, how the government has accepted this year after year. It has been normalised. It is outrageous.
