A Trinity College spokesperson said 'we work with industry because we want to make things better'

One of Ireland's biggest greenhouse gas emitters is funding the role of Trinity College's first Chair of Climate Science for the next 10 years.

A TCD spokesperson told us "we work with industry because we want to make things better" in relation to concerns about CRH's €1.5m donation.CRH owns Irish Cement and operates plants in Drogheda and Limerick that together emitted almost 1.5 million tonnes of carbon in 2022 according to the Climate Trace website founded by Al Gore. Only Ryanair and ESB emit more greenhouse gases.

She added: "It has never been more urgent for universities to pursue ground-breaking climate research. I am delighted that Trinity has appointed such a superb researcher as the first-ever Chair of Climate Science, and I am looking forward to the contribution Karen will make to research in sustainability."

Her research interests are on "whole-system climate resilience", focusing on innovative ways to combine the needs of society, renewable energy and nature towards a sustainable climate and human future.
