Former Irish army ranger claims that Ireland's Atlantic coastline is now a major entry point for narcotics into Europe, following the arrest of a gang attempting to land a multimillion euro haul of drugs in west Cork. Authorities are investigating the possibility of a small submarine being involved in the operation.

Ireland ’s Atlantic coastline is now “Ground Zero“ in the supply of narcotics into Europe, a top TD has claimed. Former Irish army ranger and defence specialist Cathal Berry was reacting to a gang of ten foreign men arrested in west Cork for attempting to land a suspected multimillion euro haul of drugs ashore. Gardai were yesterday still hunting the illicit cargo believed to have been dumped off an unknown mothership with GPS electronic tracking devices along the coastline.

Investigators are not ruling out the possibility that a small submarine may also have been involved. Detectives were also going through the records of over 40 electronic devices and phones seized to see if any locals were involved in the operation in an area near Tragumna, a couple of miles from Skibbereen. Politicians were furious that the only naval ship that the country had at sea at the moment, the LE George Bernard Shaw, was not available to assist the Gardai with their operation over the last few days after being requested to do so. Yesterday it was moored in Dun Laoghaire harbour for the St Patrick’s Day weekend celebrations and open to visits from the public. Deputy Berry said; “This is further evidence of the inadequate resourcing of our naval services to uphold law and order in our home waters
