Learn about the history and celebration of Ireland's Early May Bank Holiday, which marks the Gaelic May Day celebration known as Bealtaine.
The Early May Bank Holiday will fall on Monday May 6 this year.The holiday was officially entered into legislation by then Minister for Enterprise and Employment, Ruairi Quinn.
Bealtaine, meaning 'bright light', marked the official start of summer and people would mark the occasion by lighting large bonfires. Most employers across the state observe all of Ireland's 10 bank holidays and employees are entitled to paid leave under the Organisation of Working Time Act.
