One of Ireland's most notorious criminals, Gary McCrea, will remain behind bars for several more years. McCrea was convicted of the gruesome murder of his estranged wife, Dolores, in January 2004. He fatally attacked Dolores and disposed of her body the following day by burning it in a massive tire bonfire at their family home in Ballybulgin, County Donegal. The intense flames from the fire were visible across the local area that night.
McCrea had previously threatened his 14-year-old daughter, warning her that he intended to kill their mother. McCrea received a life sentence after being found guilty by a jury and his subsequent appeal was unsuccessful. Despite serving over two decades in prison, there are no immediate plans for his release. Sources indicate that the Parole Board has denied his request for parole, and he is not enrolled in any early release programs. Typically, lifers are placed on such programs two or three years before their release. While a life sentence in Ireland used to mean 14-15 years, the average duration has increased to 19-20 years in recent times. McCrea, now 61, has spent his sentence at Arbour Hill Prison alongside other convicted rapists, sex offenders, and violent offenders. A prison source stated, 'He may be among the longest-serving life prisoners in the country, but he won't be getting out for a considerable time. He could be here for another four or five years. What he did was absolutely horrific and caused immense shock and distress to his family and the local community. He won't be enjoying any freedom anytime soon.' Dolores and McCrea, a car mechanic, were childhood sweethearts. Dolores converted from Catholicism to Protestantism so that they could marry. A neighbor last saw Dolores alive entering McCrea's house. Her family became concerned when she couldn't be located and she didn't return to her new home after a few days. Gardai (Irish police) discovered burning human bones in the fire's ashes. Dolores was subsequently identified through her dental records. The intense burning had made it impossible for Gardai to determine the exact cause of death. Gardai had responded to the house on several occasions prior to the couple's separation, following complaints of domestic violence
