Ireland's health officials are advising the public to monitor the colour of their urine in the hot weather, noting that pale or light urine indicates a strong level of hydration.
Ireland's national health service has issued its forecast for the week, with temperatures set to drop slightly, easing the country back to more typical levels, but hydration is still very important as the heat dies down. High temperatures can affect anyone, but some people are more vulnerable to the effects of heat, including older people, infants and young children, people with chronic medical conditions, pregnant women, and those who work or spend long periods outdoors.
Heat can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. To avoid the heat, health officials recommend avoiding spending long periods outdoors during the hottest part of the day (11am to 3pm), minimising unnecessary heating - turning off central heating, electrical equipment and lights that are not needed, keeping your home cool by closing curtains or blinds during the day and opening windows when temperatures are cooler in the evening and overnight.
For staying hydrated, they also gave some essential tips: avoiding alcoholic drinks, which can also cause dehydration, aiming for pale-coloured pee as a sign of good hydration, and making sure babies are having plenty of wet nappies. Dr Caitriona Kelly, Consultant in Public Health Medicine, HSE National Health Protection Office said: High temperatures can cause people to become very sick. We are urging people to keep cool and stay hydrated during the hot weather.
This is especially important for older people, young children and those with chronic medical conditions
