Hugo Keenan started as James Topping's side defeated the Blitzboks in a vital opening Pool A encounter at the Stade de France
Two days out from the opening ceremony, Ireland's Olympic Games is up and running with a crucial first win for the Men's Sevens team at the Stade de France.
With the top two automatically progressing to the quarter-finals from each of the three pools, plus the two best third placed teams, it was important that Ireland made a positive start in their bid to earn a winnable quarter-final. Wearing all green, the Harry McNulty captained side enjoyed good early possession and Zac Ward's burst advanced Ireland towards their rivals' 22.
The first half had belonged entirely to Ireland and they finally got something tangible for their efforts in the last play, with Conroy put into space on the left wing and he trotted over. Mark Roche's conversion from the tight angle was off-target and Ireland led 5-0 at the break.
