Thirteen countries including Italy have had their bars open since May

A drinks industry lobby group found that bars are open in all other member states.A further 10 began trading again in June, one earlier this month while two nations never closed the sector.The others which serve food opened as restaurants on June 29.

The umbrella body represents Ireland’s drinks and hospitality industry, including pubs, restaurants, hotels, off-licences, brewers, and distillers.Data shows 13 EU member states, including Germany, Italy, and Austria, permitted their bars to reopen in May with social distancing restrictions in place.

If Ireland’s pubs and bars are permitted to reopen on 13 September when the latest wave of restrictions expire, they will have been closed for six months.Almost half of publicans have taken on at least €16,000 in debt since the lockdown, while one in five have taken on more than €30,000.
