Hundreds of well wishers packed into Dublin Airport to welcome the team home
Gold and silver medallist Sharlene Mawdsley and her silver teammate Sophie Becker donned their Irish kits as they were greeted by family, friends and fans in Dublin Airport's Terminal Two building on Thursday evening.
“We were kind of in a bit of a bubble in Rome. We were all absolutely elated but being back on home soil with the people who have been there through thick and thin and actually being able to celebrate it now and for them to hold a medal and see it, it just means the world. It is a thing of dreams.”She said: “We produced something so special – to be coming back with two medals, it’s everything.
Speaking after the phenomenal win, the 25-year-old’s mother Louise said she was “fit to burst” and couldn’t be more proud of her daughter. “She is a superstar, it was superb. I am so proud. She has a gold European medal and a silver European medal and a world relay bronze medal.” Gerard O’Donnell, who is one of 27-year-old Sophie Becker’s coaches, said the squad is phenomenal, and they have all played their part over the past few years of getting to the stage of standing on that podium.
Speaking after her silver medal win, she said: “I’m not going to lie, I definitely contemplated retiring last summer many, many, times and it makes it all worth it for special moments like this. I am definitely the oldest member of the relay team, and I remember my first senior championships in 2014, that’s a long time ago.
