Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan pushes for rapid ratification of an extradition treaty with the UAE to bring Irish criminals, including the Kinahans, to justice in Ireland.
Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan expressed his desire to expedite the ratification of an extradition treaty with the United Arab Emirates ( UAE ) by the Irish parliament (Dail). This treaty, agreed upon last October, would significantly empower Irish law enforcement (Garda) to apprehend Irish gangsters residing in the UAE , including the notorious Kinahan crime family.
O'Callaghan emphasized the urgency of the matter during his first press conference as minister, stating that he believes the ratification process will be swift and could occur without debate. He explained that once ratified, the treaty would enable Ireland to make formal extradition requests for individuals suspected of criminal activities in Ireland. O'Callaghan stressed that the treaty's purpose is to ensure those involved in criminal activities in Ireland face justice within the country's legal system. While O'Callaghan refrained from commenting on specific cases, including the Kinahans, he highlighted the importance of having the treaty in place to facilitate the extradition of fugitives. Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, speaking at the same press conference, confirmed that Irish law enforcement is actively targeting several individuals in the UAE, including those suspected of involvement in organized crime and murder. He acknowledged the ongoing political and diplomatic efforts between Ireland and the UAE, which have resulted in a favorable position for Ireland in pursuing extradition requests.Harris stated that the Garda's role is to investigate and compile evidence, which is then presented to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for consideration. The decision to seek extradition ultimately rests with the DPP and the judicial process in the UAE. Both O'Callaghan and Harris emphasized the commitment to upholding justice and ensuring that those who commit crimes in Ireland are held accountable, regardless of their location. The press conference coincided with the launch of a new Garda recruitment campaign, aimed at attracting 5,000 new officers over the next five years. O'Callaghan urged individuals considering career changes to explore the opportunities within the Garda Siochana, emphasizing the rewarding nature of serving the public and contributing to a safer society
