Professor Luke Clancy, Director General of the Tobacco Free Ireland Research Institute, believes Ireland should learn from Milan's new outdoor smoking ban.
Milan has introduced a total ban on smoking outdoors in the city. Tobacco Free Ireland Research Institute Director General Professor Luke Clancy said Ireland should “take note” from what Milan is doing. He thinks Ireland , which was once a leader in anti-smoking measures, is now falling behind. Professor Clancy believes that a ban on outdoor smoking would help Ireland achieve its goal of becoming a smoke-free country.
He cites studies showing that even secondhand smoke exposure outdoors can have negative effects on people who have never smoked. He also points to the success of Ireland’s 2004 ban on smoking indoors, which led to a significant drop in teenage smoking rates. Professor Clancy argues that reducing the visibility of smoking, as Milan’s ban aims to do, is key to discouraging young people from taking up the habit. He also suggests that the ban could help curb litter in Irish cities, as cigarette butts and other smoking paraphernalia contribute to a significant amount of waste
