Tadgh Beirne, a key player for both Ireland and Munster, shares how a missed email nearly led him to represent Wales instead. He explains his time at Scarlets, his almost-signing, and how the missed opportunity ultimately paved the way for his success with Ireland.
Had things gone slightly differently, Ireland star Tadgh Beirne could have been lining up in red to take on the defending Six Nations champions this weekend.
Residency rules at the time meant he would have been eligible to play for Wales after just one more year with the regional side. “At the time, the person who did the contracts, I won’t name him, was away skiing so he wasn’t replying to my agent’s emails.“I wanted them to rip up my second year and re-sign a two or three-year contract. At the time, playing for Ireland wasn’t even in the conversation. I had probably just started maybe 10 games at that point.
“I was probably lucky I didn’t end up signing that contract because I would probably be in a different place. The fact his coach at Scarlets, Wayne Pivac, ended up taking the Wales job in 2019, means it's arguably even more likely he would have been in the frame to pull on a red jersey had he stayed. Indeed, Beirne admits the Kiwi was instrumental in helping to launch his career, after an uncertain time at Leinster, where he made just four senior appearances.
