Irish Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan announced upcoming changes to asylum laws, emphasizing the need for faster processing and addressing a high number of claims deemed ineligible. O'Callaghan highlighted the efficiency of voluntary deportations and plans to utilize chartered flights and the European border agency Frontex for enforced removals.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan said that the laws around International Protection applicants will change as he insisted that many people subject to deportation issues leave voluntarily.
"But the point I'm emphasising is that we need to recognise that too many people are coming in claiming asylum when they're not entitled to asylum. "Of that 70 per cent, a significant proportion are appealed, as is their right. Those appeals haven't been heard yet. There's always going to be a right to appeal."
