Skipper Caelan Doris, prompted by Jamison Gibson-Park and with rookie out-half Sam Prendergast completing the eight-nine-ten executive, were a sign Ireland can retain 6N title

Inventive and imaginative, Ireland shrugged off a poor start against England, putting manners on them either side of half-time, before launching thirty minutes of sensational, all-court, flat-out attack.

That the game finished 27-22 didn't reflect Ireland's being the better team, rather those two late consolation tries. All three could boss games, take the ball at defenders, were excellent tactical kickers, but none could launch the type of long, flat, accurate passes across the line on show yesterday.

"We’re happy with Sam, it’s a big game, he has played in the Autumn but this is the opening round of the Six Nations here in Dublin, against England, so I think you have got to give him a lot of credit. "I thought we attacked well at times, I was happy with that kick , a couple of nice kicks to touch. There was a bit of free-flowing attack in the first half and the second half.

"And I have no idea to be honest what happened with the pass blocked on the 5m line. The ball just spread out to me. I wasn’t sure had we knocked it on, had they knocked it on. I think I definitely made the wrong decision. I’m not sure what the right decision was but I definitely made the wrong decision."

"It’s an area that Paul and the players have worked incredibly hard at. It was a real strength of ours today, the set-piece in general, our scrum and our lineout was excellent in terms of delivering good quality ball." "We made lots of opportunities. When you break it down, how we did in terms of the number of chances we have, maybe we could have done better with the ball we had.
