Ex-Cork City and AC Milan prospect Cathal Heffernan was due to be a part of Newcastle’s first-team when they faced Tottenham in Australia last month.
Ireland and Newcastle defender Cathal Heffernan has revealed why he missed out on a first-team appearance during the Premier League side’s recent tour of Australia.
Heffernan starred for the club’s Premier League 2 side and captained the Under-19s in their UEFA Youth League campaign.READ MORE:Amber Barrett on bouncing back from 'negative' year to have season of her career However, Heffernan didn’t make the flight - and he ended up in hospital instead, after suffering a freak injury at the club’s Academy headquarters.
“He was meant to head to Australia with Newcastle’s first-team and he was in the academy in Newcastle, and there was a little gap in the door, and the door closed on the back of his achilles, and he ended up in hospital,” said the Olympic bronze medalist.“I found out that I was going to Australia on the Friday, and then on the Saturday morning I was taking all my stuff out of the training ground, so I had my boots in my hand, I had everything,” he said.
