Health experts in Ireland have issued a warning about the resurgence of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, with hundreds of cases already reported this year. The disease is highly contagious and can persist for up to three months, earning it the nickname '100-day cough'.
Ireland 's health experts have issued a stark warning about the dreaded ' 100-day cough ', with hundreds of cases already reported this year.
The illness can affect people of all ages. Although most reported cases involve children aged under five, cases are reported amongst adolescents and adults every year. The disease can be especially dangerous for infants, who are at risk of serious complications. Of this year's cases, 101 have been in the 0 - 5 month age group; 87 aged 1 - 2 years; 53 aged 5 - 9 years; and 53 aged 10 - 14 years. 153 of these required hospitalisation.
A spokesperson said: "Cycles of increased pertussis typically occur every five years. We last saw high numbers of cases in 2016 and 2017. Therefore, considering the impact of the pandemic, it is not unexpected to see this increase in 2024. Similar increases are being seen across Europe. Since mid-2023, several EU countries have reported an increase in the number of pertussis cases notified. This increase has continued into 2024, and some countries have reported pertussis-related deaths.
