Bookmakers are offering odds of 5/1 on snowfall in Dublin on Christmas Day as temperatures are set to plunge in the coming days
Most of the country woke up to milder weather than expected this morning – but another Arctic blast is on the horizon with temperatures set to plunge as low as -5C in the coming days. There was some reprieve from the ice and frost of recent days on Wednesday, with the mercury remaining above freezing in most parts of the country, climbing as high as 7C along the east coast.
The thaw is temporary, however, with fog and mist expected tonight along with temperatures of between -2C and 3C. Looking further ahead, hopes of a white Christmas are increasing, with bookmakers currently offering odds of 5/1 on snow falling in Dublin on December 25. Slightly longer odds of 8/1 are available for Cork and Galway, while Limerick is 10/1. While there is considerable uncertainty at this stage, weather models suggest there is a fair chance of snow in parts of the country on Christmas Day, although Met Éireann appears less confident but does mention the possibility of wintry showers.Any frost will clear this morning leaving a dry day and while there'll be a lot of cloud, there'll be some bright or sunny spells. Cold with highest temperatures of 2 to 7 degrees, coldest in the north and west, in a light northeast to east or variable breeze. Mostly dry tonight and there's likely to be a good deal of cloud overall. There'll be some frost where there are breaks in the cloud, with these clearer spells most likely in the northwest, west and southwest. A few isolated mist and fog patches are possible too under those cloud breaks, in just light northeast or variable breezes. Lowest temperatures of -2 to +3 degrees generally, coldest in the northwest, but a little less cold in some southern and eastern coastal parts.Any frost and any isolated mist and fog will clear tomorrow morning to leave a largely dry day with a good deal of cloud and just limited sunny spells. A few patches of light rain or drizzle will occur, mainly in southern areas. Highest temperatures ranging from 3 degrees in the northwest to 7 or 8 degrees in the south and east, in light easterly breezes. Largely dry that night with a mix of cloud and clear spells. Lowest temperatures of -2 to +3 degrees generally with light variable breezes and some frost and fog patches developing. Milder though for southern and eastern counties where there will be some patches of light rain and drizzle.A good deal of cloud expected along with some patchy rain and drizzle, mainly for eastern and southern counties and then later in the northwest. Highest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees generally in light variable breezes. Largely cloudy at first with light rain or drizzle in the northwest on Friday night, slowly sinking southeastwards while becoming patchier. Fog patches will develop again. Becoming clearer in the north and west towards morning. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees with light northwesterly winds developing.Mostly dry with spells of sunshine and just well scattered showers, mainly near northern and western coasts. Through the afternoon and evening, cloud will build from the northwest. Highest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees in light westerly breezes.Mostly cloudy with a few patches of light rain and drizzle, mainly for northern and western counties. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees with moderate westerly winds developing, fresh at times in the west and northwest.
