Are there any ghost stories from your local area?

It's Halloween, and as hoards of trick or treaters descend on every available confectionary item in the land, firework displays take place, and costume parties stretch across the bank holiday, the spookier aspects of Halloween are not forgotten.

Leap Castle Not just one of the most haunted places in Ireland, Leap Castle proudly proclaims that it is one of the most haunted places in the world. The Offaly Castle, build somewhere between the 12th and 15th century according to mixed reports, has been featured on television via TV shows such as Ghost Adventures and Most Haunted.

Another haunting tale from the castle involves another set of brothers battling it out for leadership. Leap Castle was originally named ‘Leim Ui Bhanain' meaning leap of the O'Bannons, as the legend says that two O’Bannon brothers wanted chieftainship of their clan, and the only way to decide between the two of them was to make a dramatic show of bravery.

When the Great Famine struck Ireland, thousands were dying of disease and starvation. While many escaped by leaving the country, around one million people in Ireland lost their lives to the unjust plight. The battle raged between 35,000 soldiers from multiple territories, who were split in their loyalties between William of Orange and King James II. The battlefield now stands as a historic site, complete with visitors centre to learn more about the divisive battle.

For history fans, the battlefield is well worth a visit to learn about the official story behind the battle, with the visitors centre offering guided tours and often hosting historical lectures. You can fins information on their Facebook page HERE.
