Exclusive: Fire exits were blocked with clutter, smoke alarms had been removed or taped over, and lethal asbestos was found during an inspection
The former residence of Ireland’s ambassador to the United States was in violation of multiple building codes and safety regulations while it was still being used by the state, it has emerged.
This was among a litany of fire-safety issues in the house, where fire exits had been blocked with clutter, an emergency exit window had an air-conditioning unit installed in it, and there was no sprinkler system as required for a three-storey building.READ MORE: Dept of Foreign Affairs spent €500k renting house for ambassador despite owning mansion a mile away
The building’s single-paned, wood framed windows didn’t appear to have been painted in the past 10 years, and showed signs of damage due to “delayed maintenance” and age. The layout of the building, which was originally built for the uncle of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1924, did not comply with modern accessibility requirements, and its small elevator could not fit a wheelchair.
As well as breaching multiple building codes, the building was non-compliant with fire regulations. Smoke alarms had been removed from the bedroom and den area in the basement, while a smoke detector on the third floor had been taped over.
