Industrial designer Shane Holland created Submarinocurraplane, featuring recycled parts from a Boeing 707 aircraft, as tribute to 1870s inventor of modern submarine
Shane Holland's Submarinocurraplane will be on display at the Art Source fair at the RDS in Dublin later this month. Photograph: PAA descendant of the Irish-born inventor of the modern-day submarine has created a sculpture in his honour that is made from recycled airliner parts.
“I have the same initials of JP Holland too. I was named John after my dad but my mam changed it immediately to the Irish derivative of Shane to avoid confusion in the house. “I am captain of the currach team in Skerries and a boat builder, so I used currach-making techniques to finish off the sculpture form, as Holland would’ve used currachs in both his native Co Clare and along the Boyne.
