Galway-native super-featherweight boxer John Cooney remains in critical condition after undergoing emergency brain surgery following a devastating ninth-round stoppage in Belfast.
The manager of an Irish boxer who remains in critical condition after undergoing emergency brain surgery following a defeat in Belfast at the weekend said 'it's in God's hands at this point'. Super-featherweight boxer John Cooney , a Galway native, lost his first professional fight on Saturday after suffering a devastating ninth-round stoppage at Belfast 's Ulster Hall while defending his Celtic super-featherweight title against Nathan Howells.
The 28-year-old athlete required immediate medical treatment in the ring before he was rushed to Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where it was discovered that he had suffered 'an intracranial haemorrhage'. Cooney underwent immediate surgery to relieve the pressure on his brain and he remains in intensive care, under the expert care of the hospital's ICU team. Cooney's promoter Mark Dunlop appeared on The Nolan Show on Radio Ulster on Tuesday afternoon to offer a health update on the Clarinbridge boxer, where he revealed that doctors have said 'the next 24 hours are critical'. 'He has a bleed to the brain and he had an operation to relieve the pressure that was caused by swelling in the brain that was caused by the bleed,' he told host Stephen Nolan. 'So he is now in intensive care in the Royal Victoria Hospital.' Nolan then asked the boxing promoter: 'Are you saying to me the medical professionals have said the next 24 hours are critical?' 'Yes, that's how bad this is,' Cooney replied. 'But he still has a chance. 'He was in the shape of his life. He's a fit young man and it's in God's hands at this point in time.' The Galway boxer's friends have now set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to to help support his recovery. A message shared on the fundraising page states: “As you might be aware, John Cooney was involved in a BBBoC Celtic Super Featherweight title fight at the Ulster Hall on Saturday night. “Unfortunately through injuries suffered during the fight, he has sustained a intracranial haemorrhage of his brain and is currently fighting for his life in the Royal Victoria hospital in Belfast. “This fundraiser has been set up with the authorisation of his family and his boxing manager and all funds raised will go directly to the family to help and assist with John's recovery. “No matter how big or how small your donation, please know that'll help.” The GoFundMe page raised over £9,700 (€11,660) within hours of being set up and those interested in making a donation can visit the online fundraiser here. Cooney's fiancée Emmaleen and parents Hughie and Tina have expressed their gratitude for the numerous private messages of support they've received. Known as 'The Kid', Cooney has an impressive professional boxing record with 12 super-featherweight bouts under his belt. His sole career loss occurred this weekend against Howells. Prior to this setback, the southpaw had secured 11 consecutive wins, including three knockouts. The Galway boxer won the Celtic title with a first-round win over Liam Gaynor in November 2023 at a sold-out 3Arena in Dublin, on the undercard of Katie Taylor's revenge win over Chantelle Cameron. Before his fight against Howells, Cooney was eyeing a showdown against Reece Bellotti for the British title, following his triumph over Gaynor that earned him the BBBofC Celtic title.
