A US passenger plane collided with a military helicopter in Washington DC, resulting in a number of deaths and prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation. The Irish Embassy is closely monitoring the situation and has advised any citizens in need of assistance to contact them.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is monitoring the situation in Washington DC after a US passenger plane collided with a military helicopter, resulting in a number of deaths and prompting a huge search operation. Rescue teams have braved the Potomac River after the small American Airlines plane, understood to have been carrying 64 people, plunged into icy waters after colliding with a Black Hawk chopper, reported to have been carrying three soldiers.

The passenger jet was due to touch down at Reagan National Airport after its journey from Wichita, Kansas, while the chopper, reported to be a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter, was on flight training when the collision occurred, at around 9pm US time (3am Irish time). Tragically, investigators told CBS News that the bodies of 19 people have been recovered from the Potomac River on Thursday morning following the collision, with an aviation expert saying it's unlikely that anyone will have survived the crash. Following the horror crash, the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs said it was monitoring the situation, while the Embassy of Ireland, USA said that any citizens in need should contact either the embassy or department. The Embassy of Ireland, USA, shared in a post on X: “The Embassy is aware of an incident involving a passenger aircraft in Washington DC and is monitoring the situation. Citizens in need of consular assistance should contact the Embassy at +1 202 462 3939 or the Department of Foreign Affairs at +353 1 408 2000.
