It was part of a €70,000 spend after moving into a new nine-bedroom luxury mansion, which has a 500-bottle wine room and a heated pool
The Irish embassy in Washington, DC spent almost €4,300 on a carpet after moving into its new nine-bedroom mansion last year because chairs were making too much noise on its marble floors , and this was “impacting on conversation”.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is currently renting the property after the ambassador’s former residence at 2244 S Street was vacated in 2021 after a health and safety report identified “significant issues” with the building. It is in the process of disposing of the property, which is estimated to be worth more than €3.7 million.
The department has refused to release documents showing how much rent it is paying for the building, which is located in an area of the capital known as ‘Embassy Row’. In a heavily redacted document dated February 15, 2022, former ambassador Dan Mulhall discussed the merits of renovating the ambassadorial residence that the state already owns or investing in a new property.
