Irish Fiscal Advisory Council Warns of Unsustainable Government Spending Growth
Irish Fiscal Advisory Council, Government Spending, Budget Overrun

The Irish Fiscal Advisory Council has issued a stern warning that the government's day-to-day spending is growing at an alarming rate, exceeding its own budget targets for the year. With spending already up 8% year-to-date-far surpassing the 6.3% budget signal-the council predicts significant overruns and cautions that this uncontrolled growth could lead to increased inflation and long-term economic instability.

The Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (IFAC) has warned that the government's day-to-day spending is growing too fast, exceeding its own budget plans by a significant margin.

In his opening address, IFAC chairman Seamus Coffey highlighted that spending has increased by 8% year-to-date, nearly double the 4.5% growth targeted for 2024, and far surpassing the 6.3% growth signaled in the budget. This trend is not new; the government has consistently revised its spending forecasts upward, adding over €4 billion to the baseline over the past four years, with a further €1.4 billion in overruns expected for this year alone.

The rapid accumulation of debt, totaling €14 billion for 2025, is largely driven by these uncontrolled spending increases. While the government has promised to limit future spending growth to 6%, the current trajectory suggests it will be difficult to stay within this budget constraint. The council advises that spending should be capped at the sustainable growth rate of the economy, approximately 4.5-5% annually, to prevent inflationary pressures and ensure fiscal stability
