Irish gardeners are being urged to use a simple tin foil trick to protect their plants this spring, as pigeons can cause significant damage by foraging, leaving corrosive droppings and attracting other pests.
As Ireland welcomes spring, many homes across the country will be eager to fill their outdoor spaces with vibrant flowers and homegrown vegetables. However, the hard work can quickly be undone by an unwelcome visitor - pigeons.
With pigeon breeding season in full swing, Irish gardeners are being urged to take urgent action to keep them at bay. One expert has revealed a simple, budget-friendly trick that could help deter pigeons - using tin foil. This reflective material can confuse and scare pigeons away, therefore protecting your garden without harming the birds.
Pigeons prefer flat surfaces, so you can use spike strips to deter them from perching. However, these can make your garden look unsightly and can be expensive, Express reports. For a "cheaper and more aesthetic option", you can use tin foil. The expert said: “All you need to do is scrunch up some balls of tin foil and dangle them on a piece of string, when the light then hits this foil it reflects and scares the pigeons away.
Adeel added: “Pigeons are creatures of habit, and if they think that your garden is a safe space for them, they will return often. The best way to keep pigeons out of your garden is to make it as unwelcoming as possible for them without hurting them, and a cheap way of doing so is using a roll of foil from the supermarket.”
