'Providing safe care impossible' - Irish hospital overcrowding higher now than any point during Covid-19

Hospital overcrowding figures soared to 760 yesterday, making them higher than at any point since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Its general secretary Phil Ni Sheaghdha claimed that the overcrowding means “providing safe care” is now “impossible” and urged the “HSE, Government and each individual hospital group” to act urgently. “The HSE, Government and each individual hospital group must take urgent action and pull every lever available to ease the pressure in our hospitals.She added: “It is not too late to bring private hospitals on the pitch. We cannot accept this level of unsafety for patients and staff.“The INMO has been warning this was going to happen, medics have been doing the same.

Cork University Hospital’s tally of 76 was second highest and St Vincent's University Hospital’s 49 was third worst. The HSE figures cover patients who are said by doctors to need admission to hospital but who are in the emergency unit and waiting for a bed on a ward. He added: “Hospitals are dangerously overcrowded yet there is no urgency to tackle this crisis from the Minister of Health.The HSE warned hospitals in October to ensure there is "robust" planning to manage high trolley numbers this winter due to illnesses including Covid-10, the flu, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus .
