Irish Household Wealth Hits €1.4 Trillion with Rich Controlling Almost Half
Wealth Inequality, Property, Financial Assets

The total net wealth of Irish households reached a historic high of €1.429 trillion in the first quarter of 2026. While property values drove the long-term trend, the most recent increase was fueled by a significant rise in financial asset valuations. The data reveals a stark wealth inequality, with the top 10% of households holding nearly half of the total wealth, while the bottom half owns less than 10%.

The wealth of Irish households rose to a record €1.4 trillion in the first quarter of 2026 with the richest 10% of households commanding almost half.

The increase in recent years has been driven by higher property values, which account for more than two-thirds of household wealth. The Central Bank noted that the value of housing assets increased by €14.1 billion, largely due to positive revaluations.

However, the latest quarter-on-quarter rise was primarily driven by a €42.8 billion increase in the value of financial assets, bringing the total to €643.8 billion. Despite the overall growth, the distribution of wealth remains highly uneven. The bottom 50% of households own less than 10% of total wealth (€145 billion), while the top 10% own 47.2% (€693.1 billion). Bryan Harvey of WealthPlan attributed the high wealth concentration to the strong correlation between property ownership and wealth levels in Ireland.

Rachel McGovern of Brokers Ireland emphasized the need for a new savings scheme to help bridge this gap, as the current system disproportionately benefits the wealthiest individuals who hold diversified investment portfolios
