The Irish Mirror was granted access to one of the Defence Forces' two new Airbus C295 Casa maritime patrol planes built in Spain

Welcome on board the Air Corps' new €120million eye in the sky - which is being used to hunt drugs cartels, rogue trawlers and even Russian warships.

They are the State's main weapon against any country or crime gangs planning to use Irish maintained waters - called the Exclusive Economic Zone. That means targeting trawlers who break strict fish quota rules and surveilling any vessels that South American drug cartels may be using to smuggle drugs through the EEZ.

The Irish Mirror yesterday went on a maritime patrol mission on one of the C295s - that saw us fly from Baldonnel to Waterford and back.
