A motorist in County Galway, Ireland was caught by Gardaí with two children in the car, neither wearing a seatbelt, and the driver also not wearing a seatbelt. This resulted in three fines of €120 and three penalty points for the driver.
A motorist in County Galway , Ireland , was issued multiple fines after a routine traffic stop by Gardaí revealed violations of several road safety regulations. Officers from Galway 's Roads Policing Unit were on patrol on Monday when they observed a car with a child standing upright between the front seats, waving at them. Upon stopping the vehicle, Gardaí discovered another child inside who was not wearing a seatbelt.
Further inspection revealed that the driver was also not wearing their seatbelt. An Garda Síochána shared a statement on X (formerly Twitter), detailing the incident: 'As Gardaí from Galway's Roads Policing Unit were passing by this car a short time ago, they noticed a child standing-up in between the front seats waving at them. Then they noticed a second child without their seatbelt. Their mam also didn't have a belt on.' The driver was subsequently issued three fines of €120, each payable within 28 days, along with three penalty points added to their driving license. In Ireland, failure to wear a seatbelt can result in a fixed charge fine of up to €120. If the fine remains unpaid after 28 days, the amount can increase to €180 within 56 days. Additionally, three penalty points can be added to the driver's license if the fine is paid but a court appearance is not made. A conviction in court for not wearing a seatbelt can lead to a more substantial fine of €2,000 and five penalty points added to the driver's license. Despite these strict regulations, certain exemptions exist where wearing a seatbelt is not legally required, though it is strongly advised in all situations. These exemptions include specific circumstances such as driving a vehicle designed for a maximum of two passengers, being a registered driver with a disability that prevents them from wearing a seatbelt, and being involved in emergency vehicle operations
